What is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is a practical course for drivers who have recently passed their test. It was set up by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to help new drivers build skill and confidence in situations they may not have met much as a learner.

There's no exam at the end. Instead, your instructor assesses your driving as you go through each part of the course. Once you've reached the right standard in every module, you receive a certificate.

Who it suits

The course is open to anyone with a full licence, but it's most useful in your first year of driving, while habits are still forming. It suits you if:

  • you passed but feel unsure on faster or busier roads
  • you rarely drove in the dark or in bad weather while learning
  • you're about to start driving more often, for work, college or longer trips
  • you'd simply like a few more hours with an instructor before driving alone everywhere

If you passed some time ago and have stopped driving, refresher lessons may suit you better. Get in touch and we can talk it through.

What the course covers

Pass Plus is made up of six modules, each focused on a different kind of driving:

  1. In town. Heavier traffic, busy junctions, roundabouts and planning ahead in built-up areas.
  2. All weathers. Driving safely in rain, fog, ice and snow, and adjusting your speed and stopping distances.
  3. Out of town and rural roads. Bends, narrow lanes, hills and meeting farm traffic or horse riders.
  4. At night. Using your lights properly, judging distance and speed in the dark, and coping with glare.
  5. Dual carriageways. Joining and leaving at speed, lane discipline and overtaking safely.
  6. Motorways. Slip roads, changing lanes, keeping a safe gap and handling heavy traffic.

Some modules, such as weather or night driving, can be covered in theory if conditions don't allow at the time of your lessons.

How long it takes

The course is at least six hours of practical driving. Many people split it across several sessions, but it can be done over fewer, longer ones. As I offer evening and weekend appointments, it's easy to fit around work or college.

Good to know about insurance

Some insurance companies offer a discount to drivers who hold a Pass Plus certificate, but not all do. It's worth asking your insurer before you book so you know where you stand.

What to expect afterwards

When you finish, you'll get your certificate and, more importantly, real experience of the roads you'll be using from now on. Many new drivers find the motorway and night driving the biggest confidence boost.

If one area still feels shaky, we can always book extra time on it. Motorway lessons are a popular follow-on if you'd like more practice at speed.

Pass Plus questions

Anything else you'd like to know? Send me a message and I'll get back to you.

Is there a test at the end of Pass Plus?

No. There's no exam. Your instructor assesses your driving throughout each module, and once you've reached the required standard in all six, you receive your certificate.

How long does Pass Plus take?

The course is a minimum of six hours of practical driving. You can spread it over several shorter sessions or do it in fewer, longer ones. I offer evening and weekend appointments, so we can plan it around your week.

Will Pass Plus lower my car insurance?

It might. Some insurers offer a discount for drivers with a Pass Plus certificate, but not every company does. It's a good idea to check with your insurer before you book.

When should I take Pass Plus?

You can take it at any time once you have a full licence, but it's most helpful in your first year of driving, while you're still building experience on your own.

Do I have to drive on the motorway?

Motorway driving is one of the six modules, and for many new drivers it's the part they value most. If it makes you nervous, that's fine. We take it steadily and talk everything through first, and nervous drivers are always welcome.

Can I do Pass Plus in my own car?

Get in touch and we can talk about the car you'll use. It's worth having a conversation before you book so you know exactly how the sessions will work.
