What driving lessons cover

Learning to drive is a set of skills you build up over time. Lessons start with the basics: the controls, moving off and stopping, and steering smoothly. From there we add junctions, roundabouts, lane discipline, the manoeuvres you could be asked to do on test, and the independent driving section where you follow signs or a sat nav on your own.

Everything is taught on real roads in and around Chorley, so by the time you're ready for your test you'll know the kind of traffic and junctions you'll meet once you've passed.

Who these lessons suit

  • Complete beginners who have never sat behind the wheel.
  • Learners who've had lessons before, perhaps with another instructor or a while ago, and want to pick things back up.
  • Nervous learners. You're very welcome. We'll go at a pace that feels comfortable and talk things through as we go.
  • Busy people who need lessons in the evening or at the weekend because of work, college or family.

You'll need a provisional driving licence before your first lesson. You can apply for one from the age of 15 years and 9 months, and start driving on public roads at 17.

What happens on a lesson

  1. A quick chat to start. We recap what you did last time and agree what to work on today.
  2. Driving time. Most of the lesson is spent driving. Early on that's somewhere quiet. As you improve, we move on to busier roads.
  3. A short debrief. We finish by talking about what went well and what to focus on next, so you always know where you stand.

Lessons are usually booked by the hour, which gives enough time to settle in and practise properly. Some learners like to book longer sessions once they're more confident, so get in touch if that suits you better.

How many lessons will I need?

Everyone learns at a different speed, so there's no set number. Regular lessons tend to help skills stick, and extra practice with family or friends between lessons can help too. I'll be honest with you about how you're getting on and when you're ready to book your test.

Between lessons and after you pass

Keep working on your theory test alongside your lessons, as you'll need to pass it before you can book your practical test. Reading up on the Highway Code helps on the road as well as in the exam.

When you're close to test standard, test preparation lessons with mock tests can make the real thing feel familiar. Once you've passed, motorway lessons or Pass Plus can build your confidence on roads and in conditions you rarely meet as a learner.

Driving lesson questions

Something else on your mind? Send me a message and I'll answer it.

How much do driving lessons cost?

Lessons are £43 an hour. If you'd rather pay up front, a block of 10 hours costs £410, which works out at £41 an hour.

Do I need anything before my first lesson?

You'll need a valid provisional driving licence, and it's worth bringing glasses or contact lenses if you need them for driving. Comfortable shoes that let you feel the pedals help too.

I'm really nervous about driving. Is that a problem?

Not at all, nervous learners are very welcome. Lessons are friendly and relaxed, we start somewhere quiet and only move on when you feel ready.

Can I have lessons in the evening or at the weekend?

Yes. I offer evening and weekend appointments, so you can fit lessons around work, college or family. Message me with the times that suit you.

How many lessons will I need before my test?

It varies a lot from person to person, so there's no fixed number. Regular lessons and practice between them both help. I'll keep you posted on your progress and tell you honestly when you're ready.

I've had lessons with someone else. Can I carry on with you?

Of course. Let me know how far you got and we'll start from there rather than going back to the beginning.
