Chorley · After your test

Motorway Lessons from Chorley, with someone beside you.

Since 2018, learners in England can take motorway lessons before they pass, and new drivers can book them afterwards. I'll help you practise joining, changing lanes and leaving the motorway safely, in a calm car with dual controls.

What are motorway lessons?

Motorways are some of the safest roads in the country, but they feel very different from town driving. Speeds are higher, traffic moves in several lanes, and things happen quickly. Plenty of people pass their test without ever having driven on one, then find themselves facing a busy slip road alone.

A motorway lesson gives you that first experience with a fully qualified instructor in the passenger seat. You get to try it, ask questions and build habits that keep you safe, rather than working it all out on your own.

Who they suit

  • New drivers who passed recently and haven't driven on a motorway yet.
  • Learners who are confident and nearly test ready. You can drive on the motorway with an approved instructor in a dual control car.
  • Drivers coming back after a break who feel rusty at higher speeds.
  • Nervous drivers who avoid motorways and want to get past that. Nervous drivers are very welcome, and we go at whatever pace feels right.

What happens on a motorway lesson

We start with a chat about how you feel and what worries you. Then we warm up on faster dual carriageways before going anywhere near the motorway, so you're used to the speed first.

  1. Joining. Using the slip road to match your speed to the traffic, checking mirrors and blind spots, then merging smoothly.
  2. Lane discipline. Keeping left unless overtaking, changing lanes safely and reading overhead signs.
  3. Keeping your distance. The two second rule, and why it doubles in the wet.
  4. Leaving. Spotting your junction early, moving across in good time and slowing down on the exit.
  5. Smart motorways. What red X signs and variable speed limits mean, and what to do if you break down.

Most people find one or two longer lessons is enough to feel comfortable, though some like more. A session of two hours or so gives time to reach the motorway, practise properly and come back without rushing. We can talk about what suits you when you book.

Afterwards

The best thing you can do after a motorway lesson is keep it up. Take a short, quiet trip on your own or with an experienced driver soon after, ideally outside rush hour, so the skills stay fresh. If a particular bit still feels uncomfortable, like busy junctions or driving in the dark, we can book another lesson to focus on it.

Motorway lesson questions

Not sure if it's right for you? Send me a message and I'll help.

Can learner drivers have motorway lessons?

Yes. Since June 2018, learners in England, Scotland and Wales can drive on motorways as long as they're with an approved driving instructor in a car with dual controls. It's best once you're confident and close to test standard.

Do I need motorway lessons after I pass?

They aren't compulsory, but many new drivers find them very useful. Your test may not include a motorway, so a lesson lets you try it for the first time with support rather than on your own.

How many motorway lessons will I need?

It depends on you. Many people feel comfortable after one or two longer sessions, while nervous drivers sometimes like a few more. We'll talk it through and go at your pace.

Can I use my own car for a motorway lesson?

Lessons are in my dual control car, which is required for learners on the motorway and gives everyone an extra layer of safety. If you've passed and want to practise in your own car afterwards, that's a good next step.

How much do motorway lessons cost?

Lessons are £43 an hour. You can also pay for a block of 10 hours up front for £410, which brings the cost down to £41 an hour.

Can I book a motorway lesson in the evening or at the weekend?

Yes, I offer evening and weekend appointments. Quieter times like weekend mornings can be a gentle way to start.
