What test preparation lessons are

By the time your test date is booked, you can usually drive. The job now is different. Test preparation lessons are about driving consistently well, without prompts, for the whole of the test, and knowing exactly what the examiner will ask you to do.

These are still normal lessons at the normal hourly price. The difference is the focus. We spend the time on the parts of the test that catch people out and on anything you feel shaky about.

Who it suits

  • Learners with a test date coming up who want to tighten everything up beforehand.
  • People who have failed a test and want to work on the faults that came up.
  • Nervous learners who drive well in lessons but worry about freezing on the day.
  • Learners who've practised with family and want an instructor to check they're ready.

What the practical test involves

The car part of the test lasts around 40 minutes. In general, it includes:

  1. An eyesight check, reading a number plate from a set distance.
  2. "Show me, tell me" questions about basic car safety, one asked before you set off and one while you're driving.
  3. General driving on a mix of roads, through junctions and roundabouts.
  4. A reversing manoeuvre, such as parallel parking or parking in a bay.
  5. Independent driving for about 20 minutes, following a sat nav or road signs.

Some tests also include an emergency stop. We'll practise all of these so none of them comes as a surprise.

What happens in a lesson

We start by talking about where you are and what worries you. Then we drive. A typical session might cover a mock test run under test conditions, where I stay quiet and mark faults the way an examiner would, followed by a debrief and time spent fixing whatever came up.

We'll also go over the "show me, tell me" questions until you can answer them without thinking, and repeat the manoeuvres until they're steady. How many lessons you need depends on you. Some people want one or two final checks, others prefer a few weeks of focused work.

Before test day

Check your appointment details, have your provisional licence ready, and get a good night's sleep. On the day, try to do a short warm-up drive first if you can, so you're not starting cold.

After the test

If you pass, congratulations. Plenty of new drivers then go on to motorway lessons or Pass Plus to build experience on roads they never met as a learner. If it doesn't go your way, the examiner's feedback tells us exactly what to work on, and we can pick it up from there.

Why prepare with me

I'm a fully qualified, independent instructor and I've been teaching for ten years. Lessons are friendly and relaxed, which matters a lot when nerves are running high, and nervous learners are always welcome. I offer evenings and weekends too, so you can fit extra practice in before your date.

Test preparation questions

Something else on your mind? Send me a message and I'll answer it.

How many test preparation lessons will I need?

It depends on how you're driving now. Some learners only want a mock test and a final check, while others like a few weeks of focused practice. After a lesson or two I'll give you an honest view of where you are.

What is a mock driving test?

It's a practice run under test conditions. You drive a test style route, do a manoeuvre and answer "show me, tell me" questions while I mark faults the way an examiner would. Afterwards we go through it together and work on anything that came up.

How long does the practical driving test last?

The driving part takes around 40 minutes. It includes an eyesight check, safety questions, general driving, a reversing manoeuvre and about 20 minutes of independent driving.

I failed my test. Can you help me get ready for the next one?

Yes. Bring your test report along and we'll focus on the faults that were marked, as well as anything that made you nervous on the day.

How much do test preparation lessons cost?

They're the same price as my other lessons: £43 an hour, or £410 for a block of 10 hours paid up front, which works out at £41 an hour.

I get very nervous. Will that be a problem?

Not at all, nervous learners are very welcome. Lessons are friendly and relaxed, and practising under test conditions beforehand is one of the best ways to take the edge off nerves on the day.

Test coming up?

Tell me your test date and when you're free, including evenings and weekends, and we'll plan your lessons around Chorley from there.
